Part of Primary market research: the version that survives contact with reality

How to research primary market research for business teams

Primary market research for business teams starts by testing whether a method can carry the claim you need, then piloting the full participant path before spending.

What to take away

  • Pick the method by the decision it must support, not by the label on the tool.
  • A sample is only as good as its framewho could be reached, and who was left out.
  • Send every shortlisted supplier the same written brief and score their evidence, not their pitch.
  • Pilot the whole participant path, from invitation to deletion, before fielding at scale.
  • Write down the exit conditionswhat result would end the contract or kill the study.

Start with the decision, not the method

Learning how to research primary market research means judging a method by the claim it can carry. Write down the decision, the evidence gap, the population, and the claim you need to defend. A method that cannot answer that question is the wrong method, however popular it is.

Build a source hierarchy

Rank sources in this order:

  1. professional codes
  2. regulator guidance
  3. official statistics
  4. method standards
  5. peer-reviewed work
  6. then transparent technical reports The GOV.UK technology selection guidance recommends adaptable choices, data control, security review, and ownership. Vendor pages verify what a supplier offers. They are not independent proof of quality.

For each source, record several details. Note the author, date, jurisdiction, and method. Also record the funding and update status. A standard from 2014 may still hold; a pricing page from 2014 will not.

Read the method behind the label

The National Institutes of Health's mixed methods research resource makes a point that transfers well beyond health research: combining methods only pays off when the design, integration, and team capability are rigorous. Two weak studies do not add up to one strong answer.

For each candidate method, write down what it can answer.
Also record how you reach the population, the sample logic, and the instrument.
Finally, record the analysis and the failure modes. Interviews and surveys need different evidence standards. A focus group can surface language; it cannot size a market.

Check participant safeguards

Walk the participant path end to end. Recruitment, screening, consent, and withdrawal each need an owner and a written rule. The same applies to incentives, recording, confidentiality, and retention. Deletion also needs an owner and a written rule.

Sensitive topics and vulnerable participants raise the bar. If your organization has an institutional review board, its review board decides what applies. This article does not.

Inspect sampling and quality claims

Ask how the frame was built, who was selected, what quotas applied, and who was excluded. Response rates, weighting, and fraud controls belong in the same conversation.

Treat "representative" and "statistically valid" as claims to be evidenced, not adjectives to be accepted. Secondary market research carries the same burden: a syndicated report is only as good as its sampling note.

Evaluate suppliers with one brief

Send the same minimized scenario to every shortlisted provider. Ask for the proposed method, the named team, and the recruitment source. Ask for subcontractors, participant care, accessibility, and quality controls. Ask for analysis, data flow, security, and data rights. Ask for retention, deletion, deliverables, and timeline. Ask for the total cost.

Score the answers against a fixed rubric. Sales polish is not evidence. Where a figure matters and you do not have it, write the arithmetic in your own variables and let each supplier fill in its numbers.

Run a small pilot

The U.S. The Government Accountability Office's data reliability assessment guide frames reliability around several factors:

  • accuracy
  • completeness
  • applicability
  • source records
  • testing
  • documented judgment It was written for audit work. A business pilot can borrow that discipline without claiming the guide certifies anything.

Pilot the full path on limited data:

  1. invitation
  2. consent
  3. session
  4. export
  5. analysis
  6. withdrawal
  7. correction
  8. deletion Compare the findings against the original record. A pilot exposes market research strategy mistakes such as a vague decision or a convenience sample before they scale.

Question to ask

Method
What claim can it support?
Sample
Who was reachable, and who was missing?
Safeguard
How is participant risk controlled?
Supplier
Who performs each step?

Failure signal

Method
A label with no design behind it
Sample
A sample size with no frame
Safeguard
A policy that was never tested
Supplier
An unnamed team or subcontractor

Close the loop with a written recommendation

State the fit, the non-fit, the risks, and the unresolved questions. Also state the required controls and the exit conditions. Keep links and access dates so a reviewer can reproduce your evaluation.

Recheck current terms and guidance before launch. The CISA software acquisition fact sheet covers development and acquisition considerations that can inform this review. Provider capabilities and legal requirements move, and a review that was accurate in March can be wrong by September.

Common questions

Should vendor pages count as research evidence?

Use them to verify what a supplier claims, then test those claims against the same real task and the same safeguards. A vendor page tells you what a product does, not whether it works for your decision.

What belongs in a supplier pilot?

Here is the lead-in and list you requested:

Five or more items to include:

  1. invitation
  2. consent
  3. fieldwork
  4. export
  5. analysis
  6. an access change
  7. a withdrawal
  8. a correction
  9. a deletion If any step has no owner, the pilot has found its first gap.

How current does method research need to be?

Recheck sources, product terms, laws, standards, and supplier capabilities immediately before a consequential launch. Anything you cite in a decision memo should carry an access date.
