How to research market research surveys for business teams

How to research market research surveys in 2027: the named standards (AAPOR, ESOMAR, ISO 20252, Insights Association, MRS), total survey error, question design, samples, privacy law, supplier categories, cost arithmetic and a pilot process.

What to take away

  • Research the complete survey lifecycle and the intended claim before comparing platforms or panels.
  • Use named standards with explicit scope, version, method, and limits, then test them against the actual population and mode.
  • Run one end-to-end pilot that exposes coverage, wording, routing, accessibility, quality review, export, correction, and deletion failures.

Learning how to research market research surveys means studying the entire lifecycle before choosing a platform. Define the business decision, target population, intended estimate or comparison, precision need, participant risk, and consequence of error. A software feature cannot repair an unsuitable frame or ambiguous question.

Start with the professional standards

The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) publishes a Code of Professional Ethics and Practices that sets duties on disclosure and data handling. Its Transparency Initiative asks member organizations to publish core methods for each study. A buyer can ask any supplier whether it follows the code and whether it discloses methods on that basis.

ESOMAR and the ICC publish the International Code on Market, Opinion and Social Research and Data Analytics, which applies to researchers and to the buyers who commission them. The Insights Association's Code of Standards and Ethics covers U.S. practice. The Market Research Society publishes a Code of Conduct for UK researchers.

ISO 20252:2019 is the third edition of the international standard for market, opinion and social research, including insights and data analytics. It sets terms and service requirements for providers, covering documentation, records, information security, and subcontracting. Direct marketing is outside its scope. Buyers can use it as a checklist when a supplier claims to follow "industry standards".

Pew Research Center publishes detailed methods statements for its surveys, covering sampling, weighting, and question wording. Those statements show what full disclosure looks like in practice.

Study total survey error

Compare coverage, sampling, nonresponse, measurement, processing, adjustment, and analysis error. Map how frame, recruitment, mode, wording, interviewer, devices, fraud, coding, weighting, and reporting affect the specific estimate. Sample size addresses only part of uncertainty.

Review question-design evidence

The U.K. Government Analysis Function's questionnaire design guidance covers question types, wording, response options, routing, mode, layout, accessibility, testing, burden, and documentation for government surveys. Treat it as a structured reading source.

Examine plain language, one-concept questions, recall, sensitivity, open and closed formats, response categories, scale anchors, order, randomization, mode, translation, accessibility, and trend comparability. Public guidance provides practical examples. Teams drafting items can compare their wording against common market research surveys questions before finalizing the instrument.

Inspect sample and disclosure standards

The Census Bureau's preface to its statistical quality standards maps quality across planning, collection, processing, estimates, analysis, review, release, confidentiality, and data management. That lifecycle helps a buyer inspect method coverage, although it does not show that a commercial supplier follows federal standards.

Look for target population, frame, selection, recruitment, sample size, dispositions, response metrics, weighting, exclusions, quality controls, exact questionnaire, field dates, sponsor, and limitations. Responsible disclosure should let users evaluate the work, and a primary market research benchmark can help check the final numbers.

Business samples need their own checks. Ask a supplier how it verifies job title, company size, and industry for each respondent, what share of invitations reached a qualified decision-maker, and what incidence rate it observed. Qualified business respondents are scarcer, so those samples usually cost more per complete.

Privacy and consent rules: for U.S. buyers, check state privacy laws such as the CCPA and CPRA in California, plus sector rules such as HIPAA for health information and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act for financial institutions. For Canadian buyers, check PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25. Confirm lawful basis, notice, opt-in or opt-out, retention, deletion, cross-border transfer, and whether panel consent allows the intended use. The consumer research ethics guide covers consent in more depth.

Compare suppliers by category

Compare suppliers by what they actually sell. Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey are survey platforms that also sell panel access, so check whether a panel is included or billed separately. Prolific and Amazon Mechanical Turk are participant marketplaces, where the buyer controls screening and must test fraud and attention checks.

Dynata, Cint, and Toluna are sample providers, where sourcing and incidence matter most. YouGov, Ipsos, and Kantar run their own panels and research studies, so the question is whether the buyer receives raw data or only a report.

Score each on the same criteria: sampling source, recruitment method, coverage in the United States and Canada, demographic or business targeting, fraud controls, consent language, raw data export, correction rights, deletion process, accessibility, pricing model, and support. A platform that wins on export may lose on sample quality. No single supplier fits every study.

Build the budget from cost lines

Vendor prices change and vary by country, currency, and contract, so this article gives no list prices. Build the budget from cost lines instead. For example, if a team buys 1,000 completes at an assumed US$3 per complete, the sample line is US$3,000 before programming, translation, incentive upgrades, quality review, and analysis.

If incidence is 10 percent, the team must screen about 10,000 people to reach 1,000 qualified completes, so the screening volume rises tenfold. Confirm every rate in a written quote and check each vendor's current pricing page before budgeting.

Five checks should disqualify a supplier:

  • Cannot show the sampling source and recruitment method for the target population.
  • Cannot provide an audit trail from raw response to published estimate.
  • Cannot document consent, data location, subcontractors, or deletion rights.
  • Cannot run accessibility and programming tests before field.
  • Cannot quote a fixed price, timeline, or correction process.

Run a full pilot

Step-by-step sequence:

  1. Define the decision, population, estimate, precision, and risk, using the market research strategy as the frame.
  2. Draft the questionnaire and test wording.
  3. Choose frame, sample source, and mode.
  4. Program and check routing and accessibility.
  5. Run a small pilot.
  6. Review quality, correct errors, and document changes.
  7. Field the full study.
  8. Export, analyze, and delete or retain data.

Ask an independent reviewer to reproduce one published estimate from the export. Use the market research surveys checklist to record sign-off.

Write the method note before fielding. It should state the questions, the population, the sampling assumptions, the minimum tests, and the participant safeguards. Add disclosure, required skills, supplier controls, and stop conditions.

A panel that cannot show how it recruited U.S. adults aged 18 to 34 should be rejected. A question that asks two things in one item needs rewriting before it reaches any panel. Assign an owner for future corrections and for methodology questions. Before launch, recheck standards, law, platform terms, and panel practices, since each can change.

Common questions

Should vendor pages be used as survey-method evidence?

Use them to verify current product claims, then test those claims against the same questionnaire, sample, safeguards, and export requirements.

What is total survey error?

It is a way to examine interacting coverage, sampling, nonresponse, measurement, processing, adjustment, and analysis errors around a specific estimate.

Which standard should a small team read first?

Start with AAPOR's code for disclosure duties and ISO 20252 for supplier service requirements. Then check whether each supplier states which code or standard it follows.
